Amazon releases a generative AI model & deploys its 1 millionth robot

Amazon, a tech superstar, has just hit a new high in its ongoing technological evolution.

After more than a decade of progressively integrating robots into its warehouses, the company has just welcomed the millionth robot into one of its storehouses, their new home in Japan, as announced this Monday.

That's a turning point! It seems like Amazon is inching closer to a day when robots in its supply chain may match the quantity of human coworkers, according to an intriguing analysis by The Wall Street Journal. The written piece also shares that about three-quarters of Amazon's worldwide deliveries are made easier to handle, thanks to a robotic friend.

TechCrunch wanted to delve deeper into this exciting achievement, prompting them to seek further details from Amazon.

Adding flavor to this achievement, Amazon also shared exciting news about its new AI innovation named DeepFleet. Deployed to organize the movement of these warehouse robots optimally, DeepFleet is projected to enhance the speed of these droids by 10%. To make DeepFleet a reality, Amazon's cloud-based studio SageMaker came in handy in creating, training and deploying the model on warehouse and inventory data.

Hitting the million robot mark is a special moment for Amazon. But let's not forget the significant strides the company has made in refining its robotic fleet, introducing upgraded models and capabilities over the years.

This past May, Amazon revealed its most recent creation, the robotic model – Vulcan. Click to see it in action!. Vulcan flexes its two arms to rearrange and grip inventory, using a camera and suction system. But what sets Vulcan apart is its ability to "touch" and "feel" the materials it's interacting with.

In the autumn of 2024, Amazon divulged plans of their upgraded, robotics-powered storage facilities, which promised a tenfold increase in robotic residents alongside human colleagues. Shortly after, the first of these futuristically-inclined warehouses was inaugurated in Shreveport, Louisiana, not far from the Texas borderline.

This rapid robotic revolution in Amazon started brewing way back in 2012 with the acquisition of Kiva Systems.
