Databricks will pay $1B to acquire Neon, an open-source database firm

Recently, the well-known data analytics platform Databricks made a splash by acquiring Neon, a creative startup creating an open-source substitute for AWS Aurora Postgres. This ambitious acquisition, costing a whopping $1 billion, holds promises of a vibrant future for Databricks and its customers.

The essentials of Neon's technology are expected to merge with Databricks' data intelligence services, paving the way for efficient AI-agent deployment. This presents an invaluable opportunity for organizations and individuals using the platform.

Neon, launched in 2021 by Nikita Shamgunov, Heikki Linnakangas, and Stas Kelvich, provides a cloud-based database platform that puts developers in control of their databases. It gives them the luxury to clone databases and preview alterations before they are published. The platform also scales essential aspects like the processor, memory, and storage based upon usage.

Piquing Databricks' interest is Neon's compatibility with AI-agent workloads. As AI agents are capable of working at flash speeds that outpace human developers, they need a watchful eye to prevent errors. According to Databricks, 80% of the databases in Neon were created by AI agents rather than humans.

Ali Ghodsi, CEO of Databricks, shared this idea when he said, "As we enter a new era, databases must adjust to AI-native, agent-driven applications. Neon leads the way in showing how AI agents rather than humans create four out of five databases on their platform. Our aim in integrating Neon into Databricks is to provide a serverless, accessible, and as fast and open a Postgres as the Postgres community.

Neon's impressive journey so far, raising $129.5 million from big names like Microsoft's M12, General Catalyst, Menlo Ventures, and Notable Capital, is something Databricks seeks to leverage. Databricks has already raised over $19 billion, and in January alone, it closed a staggering $15.3 billion deal at a valuation of $62 billion.

Databricks' acquisition spree seems to be part of a strategic plan to ride the wave of the booming AI industry and establish itself as the preferred platform for creating, testing, and deploying AI models.
