Fidji Simo, CEO of Instacart, is joining OpenAI
Fidji Simo, the famous CEO of Instacart, is working on a new project! Fidji will join as the CEO of Applications, according to a Thursday release from OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT. An established board member of OpenAI already, Fidji will be waving goodbye to Instacart in gradual stages over the coming months, before fully diving into OpenAI.
Sam Altman, the current leader of OpenAI, plans to continue leading the firm in areas like applications, computational intelligence, and research. Fidji will analyze Altman's advice in his work.
"Applications is essentially a tight-knit family of business and operations teams that are shaping how our research can help the world. Fidji has all the perfect ingredients to captain this crew. She has been an immense help to our OpenAI board over the past year. Instacart will be saying its goodbyes over the coming months as she is set to join OpenAI full-time later this year", Altman enthusiastically posted on his blog.
According to Altman, Fidji will also be the knight in shining armor for OpenAI as it tackles scaling some regular company functions. He did not, however, provide any other information at this time.
Fidji carries with her a suitcase full of experience in product management and making money. Before moving to Instacart in 2021, she clocked over a decade at Meta, winning runs with the launch of News Feed ads, heading monetization for the Facebook app, spearheading product development for Facebook Video, and building its ad business. As the head of the Facebook app, she said goodbye to Meta. After buttoning up her raincoat at Instacart, she steered the company to go public in 2023.
In a note on X, Fidji shared that she would stick around as the chair of Instacart's board. In a tender letter to Instacart's employees, she revealed that her successor as CEO would be an existing member of the management team, and a formal announcement is on the horizon.
In Fidji's words, "Stepping onto the OpenAI stage at this turning point is an honor and a great responsibility. This organization has the power to turbocharge human potential like we've never seen before. I am wholly dedicated to molding these applications for the greater good."
