From reports, Meta hires Apple's head of AI models
Apple's AI maestro, Ruoming Pang, is swapping his title at Apple for a new role at Meta, as reported by Bloomberg this Monday. This recruitment coup is the latest in Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's spree of high-profile AI hires in his quest to current his AI dream team.
At Apple, Pang was the maestro, orchestrating the in-house ensemble that honed the AI foundation models which form the backbone of Apple Intelligence and other on-device AI offerings. While Apple’s AI attempts haven’t taken the tech world by storm, they have shown some promising potential. Despite lagging behind the capabilities of AI giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta, Apple has shown tenacity in considering partnering with third-party AI models for its upcoming AI-boosted Siri update.
However, insiders spilled to Bloomberg that Pang's exit might be the tip of the iceberg, potentially signaling a wave of departures from the stormy seas of Apple’s AI department.
Despite the turbulence, Pang's expertise in crafting compact, on-device AI models can be a valuable asset to Meta, placing him at the heart of the high-caliber talent that Zuckerberg has lured in from the glittering realms of Google's DeepMind, OpenAI, and Safe Superintelligence, among others.
