Google gives Indian users access to AI mode

Today, the tech giant, Google, extended its fascinating AI mode, a tool that allows Q&A style searching, to its audience in India. However, this genius tool is currently under the experiment phase, so if you want to take it for a spin, you'll have to opt-in via Search Labs.

After you've opted in, you can throw all kinds of English questions at it. Unfortunately, Google hasn't revealed if it will include local language support or when that might be possible.

This curious tool allows you to ask complex, multi-layered questions like, "My kids are 4 and 7 and they have energy to burn. Give me some creative ideas to keep them moving indoors, especially on sweltering days. Nothing that requires too much space or expensive toys, please." It doesn't stop there; you can also ask further questions to narrow down your search results.

On its inception, Google tested AI mode with its premium subscribers in the U.S. before expanding it to all U.S. users after its Google IO event. Over time, Google has enhanced it with a shopping feature, introduced voice and image search capabilities, and also advertised on it.

Good news for users in India, because Google's voice and image search features are available in your region and voice is a commonly-used method for search queries. This impressive AI mode is fueled by a custom version of Gemini 2.5. An interesting insight shared was that early bird testers of this AI mode were actually asking questions that were 2-3x longer.

India, being home to over 870 million internet enthusiasts, is a significant market for Google. It also serves as a perfect testing field for Google to identify how polyglot users interact with its suite of innovative products.

Nowadays, while Google still claims a significant portion of the search market, there's a shifting trend towards chat-based AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity when it comes to daily digital interactions. With the introduction of its AI mode, Google is looking to rope in users who are comfortable with such interfaces.

In addition to AI mode, Google has championed several other innovative features like AI overviews that condense search results for you. In April, Google reported that its AI overviews are being used by over 1.5 billion people worldwide. However, earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal indicated that publishers might be feeling the pinch due to Google’s AI features, as they've experienced a substantial decrease in organic search traffic.
