Google's Doppl: An AI Virtual Try-On App for Fashion Fans

Google is set to introduce a novel experimental mobile application named Doppl. The defining feature of Doppl? Using artificial intelligence to provide a sneak peak of how you would look in various outfits. The details were unveiled on Thursday, and the app is now accessible in the U.S through both iOS and Android.

Here’s how Doppl works: you start off by uploading a full-length snapshot, then you can pick and choose photos or screenshots of different garments to digitally 'try on'. Whether it's the interesting outfit you stumbled across in a thrift shop, or a snazzy getup you saw someone wearing on Instagram, Doppl allows you to see how they would look on you.

When you’ve picked an ensemble to inspect, Doppl uses your photo to create a virtual image of you fashioning that attire. But it doesn’t stop at images, thanks to AI, Doppl can create quick videos that give you an even more realistic idea of how you would look in the outfit, as it shows how it moves and fits with your form.

What’s more, you can store your favorite looks and review your previous virtual fitting sessions. The sharing feature ensures you can show off your fun and engaging virtual sessions to everyone.

Google has stated that Doppl expands on Google Shopping’s recently introduced functionalities which accommodate for virtual clothes try-on. Google believes launching this feature as a distinct application will drive more accessibility and allow users to explore their style in a thrilling way. This will not only provide an amazing user experience but also provide Google with valuable user data, which can help shape future improvements of this kind.

In the past, Google's virtual try-on technology displayed clothing on a range of model figures. Doppl, however, goes beyond this by enabling you to try on clothes on a digital twin of yourself.

"Exploring your style in novel and exciting ways is what we envisage for Doppl," says Google. They further explained that as an experimental project under Google Labs, Doppl is still in its initial stages and may not be perfect. Aspects such as fit, appearance, and apparel specifics may not always be spot on.

Being an exploratory venture, it remains uncertain when or if Google plans to extend Doppl to other regions.
