‘Wizard of Oz’ blown up by AI for giant Sphere screen
Experience a unique cinematic treat at the colossal Las Vegas venue, Sphere. Starting August 28, the iconic film, "The Wizard of Oz," will be screened here, promising you an unforgettable experience unlike any traditional movie screening. Instead of merely projecting the film on Sphere’s whopping 160,000 square foot, 360-degree LED screen, it's time to brace yourselves for innovation like you've never seen before.
As shared by the Sphere Entertainment CEO, James Dolan, in an interview during CBS Sunday Morning, an ambitious team of 2,000 people is revamping this film extravaganza. They're leveraging AI technology to ramp up the resolution of the existing film, while also extending the footage beyond the original frame.
Ever wondered how it would feel to experience every fine detail while watching a film? Imagine Dorothy's grainy close-up transforming into a rich, detailed image. Can't picture it? Well, Turner Classic Movie host Ben Mankiewicz illustrates how AI makes it possible. Through a technique known as outpainting – something that feels like magic – we'll be able to see a complete picture, including the Scarecrow, the Yellow Brick Road, and the vast mountains of Oz.
Aside from enhancing existing frames, AI technology will also be used to create fresh performances using the film's original actors. But while these updates promise an exciting, immersive experience, Dolan assures us that they won’t alter the film. Instead, they'll bring viewers closer to the movie, making them feel as though they were on set during filming. What's more immersive than that?
